Course Description:
This focused advanced anesthesia course is designed for New York State dentists who currently hold an anesthesia and/or sedation permit and provide outpatient sedation in dental practice settings. The program emphasizes clinical decision-making, patient assessment, and recognition of key risk factors that determine whether a sedation case is appropriate for office-based management or requires referral.
Through real-world case scenarios and structured discussion, participants will explore pre-operative work-up protocols, anesthesia safety boundaries, and clinical patterns that signal elevated risk ("lane departure warnings") during outpatient anesthesia. The course is intended to enhance safety, reinforce regulatory expectations, and support sound judgment in anesthesia case selection.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this 4.5-hour course, participants will be able to:
- Perform a comprehensive pre-operative anesthesia evaluation, including ASA classification, airway assessment, comorbidity review, and indications for additional work-up.
- Identify patient-specific and procedural risk factors that determine suitability for office-based sedation versus referral to a hospital or higher-acuity environment.
- Apply evidence-based decision pathways and algorithms to determine:
- Is this case appropriate for my office?
- What additional work-up is necessary?
- When should the case be modified, postponed, or canceled?
- Recognize early warning signs of physiological decline during outpatient sedation and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Integrate documentation standards, informed consent requirements, and NYS anesthesia regulations into routine practice.
